At the age of 18 Tero bet the national area record 450 cm by two centimeters, a record which used to belong to Tapani Haapakoski, one of the most prominent pole jumpers in Finland during the 80's. Quite surprisingly Tero quit his promising athlete career at the age of 20 after a strong religious awakening. But his pole jumping record of 490 cm remained.
